    • Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:

Niña Chilapa is a film that rests between the thin boundaries of documentary and fiction, approaching us through an intimate look at the daily life of a jungle girl who grows on screen to tell us about the complexity of being a woman. She reveals a humanity under construction, imperfect, organic, and changing over time. Through an observational language that approaches us almost like a caress, we build a story that questions us as a society, challenges us as viewers, and invites us to reflect. Yulieth, the protagonist, is a real character, a girl who plays, a teenager who feels, and a woman who dreams. She lives in an exuberant natural territory that shelters her, but simultaneously has a different rhythm from the city. The tropics act with the haste of the sun, with the fragility of the perennial, in a cycle of life that does not stop.

With this story I approach two silent issues: first, the women who co-opted hegemonic spaces of masculinity in the conflict, exercising control and territorial power and pursuing individual claims. And second, menstruation. A matter as natural as it is hidden, which encloses in its scarce representation, the repression of female sexuality and the stigmatization of our body. LA MONA is a paramilitary that claims authority in a village forgotten by the State. And she is menstruating. Her body is the bastion of her strength and evidence of her torn motherhood, her truncated sexuality, of her stark intimacy. I want to free this short film from the dismal dichotomy of good guys and bad guys, and I want to do it through the use of the Western, a hyper-masculine and colonial genre. The story of LA MONA does not revolve around the conquest of an immense territory but is articulated around the tensions of intimate spaces and the contradictions of a woman who exercises a role of power.

«The Cricket» begins as a reflection on gender equality. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, my partner in the film company that we have in Mexico City (Mandarina Cine) had been a mother for a few months. In dialogue with her, we remember the case of Carolina Bescansa, a Brazilian deputy who was highly applauded for taking her baby to a session at the Brazilian Congress and breastfeeding her baby in session. Of course, it was an important event and it has been seen as an advance towards gender equality. However, despite how valuable the image was, our reflection was diverted to thinking that the deputy’s partner was not carrying the same responsibility and for sure the next day or in the next few months he wouldn´t do it. The idea that parenting is a female act continues to run deep in the idiosyncrasies of Western cultures, and that’s where this project came from. Imagine a totally masculine world that is interrupted by the presence of a baby who in theory should be cared for by her mother and not by her father, who is a young professional boxer. The short film questions what we understand as masculinity. The boxers observe the presence of the baby as a threat and the young boxer as a person who does activities exclusively for women. The hostile environment is transformed until the acceptance of the baby, however, the best friend of our protagonist represents that machismo that refuses to change despite the circumstances. The short film was shot with real professional boxers. The young boxers have 2 to 4 fights as professionals. It was important to me that the fights and training were real. In addition, as a director who came more from the documentary field, I wanted boxers to adopt the dialogues and actions marked in the script and transform them into their daily lives, a world that only they know. The presence of El Jaguar, the boxers’ couch was fundamental. The Jaguar was four times the national champion in Mexico, today retired, he trains many young boxers and he has all the respect of his pupils. During shooting, the dynamic between the coach and the pupils moved to the screen and El Jaguar gave a tone to the shoot that was natural to his conception of a boxing coach. The shooting was all in Mexico City in one of the traditional boxing neighborhoods.
