After their grandfather’s death, Gael travels to Puerto Rico seeking family and forgotten roots. There, they meet Mateo, a local who sparks an unexpected bond. What begins as a short visit turns into a month of desire and belonging, until one last night reveals how a fleeting encounter can change a life.

Tras la muerte de su abuelo, Gael viaja a Puerto Rico en busca de su familia y de unas raíces olvidadas. Allí conoce a Mateo, un joven local que despierta un vínculo inesperado. Lo que comienza como una breve visita se transforma en un mes de deseo y pertenencia, hasta que una última noche revela cómo un encuentro fugaz puede cambiar una vida para siempre.

Synopsis / Sinopsis:

After the loss of their grandfather, Gael travels to Puerto Rico to reconnect with their grandmother, their sister, and the roots they thought were distant. Amid the island’s warmth and vibrant culture, they meet Mateo, a local who sparks an instant connection. What begins as a short family visit slowly turns into a month of discovery, desire, and belonging. As departure draws near, one final night together makes Gael realize that some encounters, however brief, can reshape a life forever.

Tras la muerte de su abuelo, Gael viaja a Puerto Rico para reencontrarse con su abuela, su hermana y las raíces que creía lejanas. Entre paisajes caribeños y la calidez familiar, conoce a Mateo, un joven local con quien surge una conexión inmediata. Lo que debía ser una visita breve se transforma en un mes de descubrimiento, deseo y pertenencia en la isla. Cuando llega el momento de partir, una última noche juntos le revela a Gael que algunos encuentros, aunque fugaces, cambian el rumbo de una vida para siempre.

JOSHUA HERNÁNDEZ

Joshua Hernández (he/they) is a filmmaker and actor of Puerto Rican descent. Their films EZRA and RIVER have screened at LGBTQ+ film festivals worldwide, including OutFest Fusion, NewFest, and Inside Out Toronto. They are a recipient of the 2026, 2025, 2024, and 2023 Miami Dade County Artist Grant, and a 2025, 2021 New York Foundation for the Arts Grant. Joshua’s television credits include THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY (Season 3), SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT, and DEAR EDWARD. They’re a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association.

Sus películas EZRA y RIVER se han proyectado en festivales internacionales de cine LGBTQ+ como OutFest Fusion, NewFest e Inside Out Toronto. Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:

As a Puerto Rican who didn’t grow up on the island, I would visit my family as a child and wonder why we had to be so far away from each other. When my grandpa passed away in 2022, I realized I needed to spend more time with my family and reconnect with my Puerto Rican heritage. I’ve since questioned whether to leave the states and move to the island or stay a distance away and visit every once in a while with an open heart. These back-and-forth feelings of diaspora fueled my desire to make this film. CHULO explores the love I have for Puerto Rico, my family, and passionate romance. The word chulo in Spanish can be used to describe a person, a moment, or a feeling. As a filmmaker and actor, I wanted to paint the person, moments, and feelings that made me fall in love with Puerto Rico. I play Gael in this film to illustrate a lived experience that is both authentic and vibrant. I share the screen with my real-life grandma to showcase the true love I have for my family, and I take us on a journey through some of the most beautiful landscapes to demonstrate the power of love.

Como puertorriqueño que no creció en la isla, cuando era niño visitaba a mi familia y me preguntaba por qué teníamos que estar tan lejos unos de otros. Cuando mi abuelo falleció en 2022, me di cuenta de que necesitaba pasar más tiempo con mi familia y reconectar con mi herencia puertorriqueña. Desde entonces, me he preguntado si irme de Estados Unidos y mudarme a la isla o mantenerme a distancia y visitar de vez en cuando con el corazón abierto. Estos sentimientos de diáspora que iban y venían alimentaron mi deseo de hacer esta película. CHULO explora el amor que siento por Puerto Rico, mi familia y un romance apasionado. La palabra «chulo” en español puede usarse para describir a una persona, un momento o un sentimiento. Como cineasta y actor, quería retratar la persona, los momentos y los sentimientos que me hicieron enamorarme de Puerto Rico. Interpreto a Gael en esta película para ilustrar una experiencia vivida que es a la vez auténtica y vibrante. Comparto la pantalla con mi abuela de la vida real para mostrar el amor que tengo por mi familia, y nos llevó en un viaje a través de algunos de los paisajes más hermosos para demostrar el poder del amor.
