Short Synopsis / Sinopsis Corta:

An aging hermit, Eloy, lives in seclusion in the Colombian mountains, haunted by his grandfather’s ghost and bound to the land. When park rangers bring news of his dying mother, Eloy faces a choice between returning to his family or remaining in the mountain that defines him.

Eloy, un viejo ermitaño, vive recluido en las montañas de Colombia, perseguido por el fantasma de su abuelo y profundamente arraigado a la tierra. Cuando unos guardabosques le traen la noticia de que su madre está muriendo, Eloy se enfrenta a la decisión de regresar con su familia o permanecer en la montaña que lo define.

ANDRÉS I. ESTRADA

Venezuelan, Canadian

Andrés is a Venezuelan filmmaker and a graduate of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. His work moves fluidly between documentary and fiction, weaving elements of magical realism into lived reality. His debut documentary short, AUDIO Y EL CAIMÁN (2024), has screened at over 20 international festivals, including Sheffield Doc/Fest and Hot Docs, and has received multiple awards. He is currently developing his first feature film, EL PADROTE.

Andrés es un cineasta venezolano, graduado de la Escuela de Cine Mel Hoppenheim. Su obra explora la fricción entre lo real y lo ficcional, incorporando el realismo mágico como dispositivo narrativo y político. Su cortometraje documental debut, AUDIO Y EL CAIMÁN (2024), ha sido seleccionado en más de 20 festivales internacionales —entre ellos Sheffield Doc/Fest y Hot Docs— y ha recibido múltiples premios. Actualmente desarrolla su primer largometraje, EL PADROTE.

From the beginning, I wanted this film to explore the tension between belonging and liberation, the idea that the land and the place where we come from do not have to define the whole of who we are. Our histories, our landscapes, and our inherited burdens shape us, but they should not imprison us. To grow, sometimes we must shed that skin, leave behind what feels immovable, and step into the unknown. That departure is never easy, and yet it does not erase what we leave behind. As an émigré who left Venezuela with family still there, I understand Eloy’s fear of leaving behind a place that feels like both home and, at times, a cage. It is a painful process that tests one’s character. The nostalgia for what could have been, and the weight of transformation, have never truly left me. Yet these processes are often necessary. Too often, without realizing it, we become our own greatest obstacle. The ones who hold us back, who block our own steps, who refuse to let love in. We should carry our origins within us, not as chains, but as reminders of who we are and where we come from.

Desde el comienzo quise que esta película explorara la tensión entre el arraigo, la pertenencia y la liberación. La idea de que la tierra y el lugar de dónde venimos no tienen por qué definir por completo quiénes somos. Nuestras historias, nuestros paisajes y las cargas que heredamos nos moldean, pero no deberían aprisionarnos. Para crecer, a veces debemos mudar de piel, dejar atrás aquello que parece inamovible y adentrarnos en lo desconocido. Esa partida de lo que sentimos nos pertenece e identifica ; nunca es fácil y, aun así, no jamás borra lo que dejamos atrás. Como emigrante que dejó Venezuela con parte de su familia aún allí, entiendo el miedo de Eloy a abandonar un lugar que se siente a la vez como hogar y, en ocasiones, como una prisión. Es un proceso doloroso que pone a prueba el carácter. La nostalgia por lo que pudo haber sido y el peso de la transformación nunca me han abandonado del todo. Sin embargo, estos procesos suelen ser necesarios. Con demasiada frecuencia y sin darnos cuenta, nos convertimos en nuestro mayor obstáculo. Somos quienes nos frenamos, quienes bloqueamos nuestros propios pasos, quienes nos negamos a dejar entrar el amor. Debemos llevar nuestros orígenes dentro de nosotros, no como cadenas, sino como recordatorios de quiénes somos y de dónde venimos.
